On my recent trip to NZ, Dan and I stayed in Rotorua for 5 nights. The town sits on top of thermally active ground, and the mud pools and lakes bubble and steam continuously. And it did smell rather bad. We stayed at a Mexican themed hostel called Cactus Jack's, which we highly recommend - free soup at 6 every night, free thermally heated spa, excellent customer service and very cool decoration. So if you ever find yourself in Rotorua, I recommend them
